The Modified Special is a nice middle ground between the Ray Special and the Modified Ottertail. The Modified Special is ideal for paddlers who like the look and feel of the Special but find the long blade a little too long for the shallow stuff. Ideal for canoe tripping, lake paddling as well as soloing, the Modified Special is a beautiful well proportioned paddle.
All paddles take up to 3 weeks to craft and 4-6 days in shipping.
It’s winter here is Wisconsin so not likely to get ‘er in the water until spring. In the meantime the paddle feels smooth, looks perfect and is proportioned just right. I did give it a couple light coats of oil to keep it hydrated over the long winter. Wouldn’t be surprised if I’ll need another next summer!

New favorite!
I have been canoeing for 30+ years and this paddle is the best. I got it in maple, does not feel heavy at all. Looks great and paddles great. Feels good to buy American craftsmanship.

Love my Modified Special
I ordered a cherry wood modified special in oil finish. Absolutely love it. I just finished a weekend trip to the St Regis area and used loved every second of paddling. Very very happy with it and I’d recommend ordering one if you’re on the fence.

Fast and versatile!
Amazing craftsmanship. It's gorgeous. I noticed right away that I was moving faster than with my old paddle. I also felt more in control. I could turn sharper and with more accuracy. It's such a a great all-around paddle. Good in deep water and a few feet deep. Once the water is less than 1 foot deep it gets a little awkward. I think this will be my main paddle 90% of the time from now on. I love the handle. It's different than what I'm used to but once I got used to it, I really felt in control. The shaft is the perfect length for prying against the gunnel for extra speed and less effort.
I also got a Quill paddle because I really like kneeling in the canoe. These two feel like a great combo for me. Then I have my old laminated Bending Branches Beaver Tail paddle for shallow rocky water.
